MEN AT WBFN Space for Connection

At the core of every strong community is a space where people feel seen, heard, and supported. Recognizing the value of meaningful connection and conversation among male members in the WBFN community, the ‘Men at WBFN’ group was formed to offer a forum where they can come together, share experiences, and help each other through the challenges of work, family, and life transitions. We heard from three members who reflect on what drew them to the group and how it has shaped their journeys.

What inspired you to join the ‘Men at WBFN’ group, and how has being part of it impacted your personal or professional life and broadened your perspectives?

Ronald Owora

My move to D.C marked my first experience living outside of my home country. My initial motivation for joining the community was to establish connections and share experiences with other men of similar backgrounds. This has proven to be a rewarding endeavor, as I have cultivated several meaningful and fulfilling friendships. The guidance and insights shared by other members, both personally and professionally, have significantly eased my transition to life in DC.

It was wonderful to learn about the Men's Group during the welcoming session. It serves as a valuable support network for men in similar situations. Since the majority of WBFN members are women, I try to bring a male perspective to the discussions.

While the broader WBFN community already offers so much, I joined Men at WBFN thanks to another member, Erwan Coisy, who told me a bit about the group. I saw it as a great way to connect more closely with other male spouses who, like me, are navigating the unique experience of relocating to the U.S. I was looking for a smaller, more focused space where we could share personal and professional experiences, learn from one another, and offer mutual support.

Since joining, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting truly kind and inspiring men from diverse backgrounds. It’s been both enriching and grounding. For example, Nathan Ochole shared with the group the business he is building in the U.S. as a professional photographer—HeadShotPix. On that occasion, he generously offered complimentary headshot sessions to group members. I was lucky to benefit from his talent and was genuinely impressed by both his generosity and skill.

The group also gave me a space to share my own background and recent candidacy for the Bank-Fund Board of Directors. The encouragement and support I received during the election meant a lot and gave me great confidence moving forward. I'm truly grateful for that.

What has been the most valuable experience or takeaway from the group so far, and why would you recommend it to others?

Ronald Owora

I am particularly grateful for Ms. Sandipa's career advice session hosted by WBFN. The insights gained from this session have been invaluable in navigating my job search and developing a comprehensive understanding of the US career landscape.

The career development session for men was incredibly informative and productive, and I would love to see more sessions like this, along with other professional development opportunities. Bowling session once a month is also a great opportunity to hang out and exchange ideas.

The most valuable aspect has been the genuine support and camaraderie within the group. It’s not just about networking — it’s about building trust, encouraging each other, and finding common ground through shared experiences.

Beyond the social connections, I’ve also participated in meaningful sessions, including a professional development workshop led by Sandipa Basnyat, which provided practical insights into navigating the U.S. job market. Another recent brainstorming session, led by Emmanuel, on expanding the Professional Development Groups framework to help members continue growing professionally, sparked some great ideas. It showed how this group can contribute not only to men’s interests but also to the broader WBFN community.

For anyone new to this journey — especially male spouses adjusting to a new environment — this group is a safe, warm, and welcoming space that can help bridge the gap between transition and belonging

In what ways do you think this group creates a supportive space for male members to share challenges and find solutions together?

Ronald Owora

The social events, like the bowling sessions, are also a great way to socialize and connect with other men. I value the meaningful relationships I have developed through these gatherings. Additionally, the WhatsApp forum is a valuable resource for seeking help and advice on various topics.

Hosting a monthly Men's Group meeting, similar to the Storytelling Group, where members can discuss various topics and share challenges, could be incredibly beneficial. Additionally, offering more professional development sessions would likely attract more men. For instance, gaining access to some of the online training programs available to WB staff could be valuable. Furthermore, if the group could stay informed about events at the Bank that are open to spouses and share these opportunities with members, it would create a great platform for networking and personal growth.

Men at WBFN creates a relaxed, non-judgmental environment where members feel comfortable opening up about their challenges — whether personal or professional. There’s a strong sense of mutual respect and a real willingness to help, whether it’s through sharing job search tips, offering advice, or simply spending time together through casual meetups and shared hobbies.

It’s also a space that inspires action. Personally, being part of the group encouraged me to get more involved in the wider WBFN community — including my recent application and selection to join the Executive Committee. That step was largely thanks to the connections and encouragement I received here, especially from Joel Ssevume.

The ‘Men at WBFN’ group is steadily growing and if you are looking for connection, perspective, and a safe space,  there is a seat at the table waiting for you. Join us!
